Traditional Wet Shaving & More!

Becoming a Barber: Week 2

Hey Shavers,

During my second week, we learned about Bacteriology and all the bacterial, viruses, and blood borne pathogens that we will need to be aware of in the barber shop. We also began learning and practicing proper sanitation and disinfection methods.  Towards the end of the week, we covered shampooing and scalp treatments and I got to perform my first shampoo and scalp treatment with a partner; unfortunately, I soaked the back of my partners shirt during the shampoo, so I need to work on technique.

I got to meet and attend a guest lecture from Ivan Zoot, The Clipper Guy, at the beginning of the week.  He lives in Chicago, but was in Florida for the Premier Hair Show in Orlando. He presented The Five Tools of Barbering.

I was wrong, in my first update; we will learn clipper cutting during Phase 1, but clippers aren’t issued until that specific week. Otherwise, impatient students may cut their mannequin’s hair short before performing other/various, longer hairstyle cuts & techniques required before clipper cutting. This upcoming week we will begin learning shear cutting (scissors) for female hair, and male hair the next week.

RazoRock ( restocked XXX and Don Marco shaving soaps this week and introduced several new and limited edition aftershave splashes and soaps, including P.160 Special which is an updated formulation of the well regarded, out-of-production, Italian soft soap, P.160; if I understood correctly, RazoRock purchased the recipe.  The initial stock has already sold out, but I’d like to try it eventually, based upon its stellar reputation.

My wife and I entertained out-of-state guests last weekend, one of which has begun traditional wet shaving.  He appreciated my overstocked shave den and I was happy to send him away with generous samples of: Proraso Sensitive Soap & Pre Shave, Jack Black Triple Cushion Cream & Shaving Lube, Barrister & Mann, Petal Pusher Fancies, and How To Grow A Mustache shave soaps, and an Omega synthetic badger brush and Gillette DE travel razor, plus several sample blades.

Until next time, Shave Well!
